patch size

I just can't stop thinking about next year and dreaming of a new patch.
I've been making some sketches of how to most efficiently use the space
I have.  I'd really like to hear what people think is an IDEAL SIZE and
shape for an AG plot, and also what people think is the MINIMUM SIZE and
shape for an AG plot.  I'd also like to hear stories of huge pumpkins
grown in ridiculously small gardens (this will give me hope for this
year).  Also any ideas about how to orient or train vines to make the
best use of space.

One more question for those of you who have turned lawns into gardens.
What is the best way to get rid of the grass?  I have tried ripping the
sod off with a spade and then banging the soil off the roots with a hand
shovel but this will take me forever!  Any suggestions?
