Pick Pumpkins with dead leaves?

Hi all,
   Should I pick my pumpkins on the vines where most of the leaves are now
dead.  The stem and vine looks good, most of the leaves are dead.  I'm
wonder if the pumpkin is still getting nutrients and stands a better chance
of making it to Halloween if I leave it attached to the vine.  The pumpkins
are orange.  My goal is to make the pumpkins last until Halloween. The heat
has been brutal here in Maryland this year.  Thanks.
