How do you bury the vines?

Hi all,
   I'm new to the list and would like a description and tips of burying the
vine to promote root growth.

Do you bury the entire length of the vine or just in the spots where the
leaf stalks are connected?

Do roots only grow from where the leaf stalks are connected? If so, why bury
the entire length of the vine?
