A Question from a first time grower

I have a single, though vigorous pumpkin vine and have two serious pumpkins
growing on it.  I am not going for any records, I just want to bring one or
two pumpkins to maturity this season.

My question:  as the pumpkins grow bigger, should I be putting anything
under them to protect them from the ground?  such as newspaper, plastic,
cardboard etc...???

or should I just let them lie on the ground, getting bigger and bigger.
