Styrofoam has worked for me in the past. Make sure the water runs off and doesn't puddle under the pumpkin. Buy the thick stuff at a building supply store.
Be very careful lifting the pumpkin. It's a two person job. One to lift straight up without twisting and one to slide the styrofoam under. Be sure the vine does not have roots close to the pumpkin. If so, gently cut them so the vine has plenty of slack. and nothing is in the way where the styrofoam is to be placed. Cut any side vines or leaves that are close to the pumpkin if necessary. Shade the pumpkin only, with a sheet or tarp raised above the pumpkin.

I have a single, though vigorous pumpkin vine and have two serious pumpkins
growing on it. I am not going for any records, I just want to bring one or
two pumpkins to maturity this season. My question: as the pumpkins grow bigger, should I be putting anything
under them to protect them from the ground? such as newspaper, plastic,
cardboard etc...???or should I just let them lie on the ground, getting bigger and bigger.
thanks very much.
