Interior Alaska update
Season's over here, at least in this little patch in Fairbanks.
Beautiful large plants with enormous leaves are throwing out new pumpkins
like crazy, but it's too late. The first frost will probably arrive
before the end of the month; the fair has come and gone.
Looked like a promising season in June -- by late June, there were plants
with boys and girls, but the first five fruit didn't set. Hope wasn't
lost, though, because others set later, but the only remaining promising
one, which seemed to have stopped growing a few days ago, has been invaded
by some kind of terminal rot. Last year, moose; this year, smaller
invaders.
But, that's okay. This year's corn took the grand champion ribbon for
veggies/fruit at the fair.
