Is this the white, powdery mildew? If so, then the only prevention I hve seen
effective is a preventative program. Start in late July to spray a fungicide
such as Captan powder or Daconil liquid to kill early spores.
Powdery mildew, as explained to us at our CA growers meeting by a plant
biologist PhD, comes with hot, dry weather. Usually we connect mildew with
leaving the clothes in the washing machine, a warm humid environment. (Such
is the wonder of nature!) He said the the spores are (ready?)
"hydrothanotic." That means they are killed by water. I think that was his
word. I did not have the opportunity to use it three times that day and make
it my friend.
And it sounds like you had a vine borer. This is outside my experience since
I live in the pest free (ha) state of California.
