Boyer Park Update
All the pumpkins that were pollinated in July and Early August got to the
4-5in range and rotted. While trying to protect from the hot days I think
I got the humidity up too high for too long and caused the rot. I now have
3 set and growing on my Welty 379.5. I have 3 plants growing from the
Swalley 60 seeds that were treated. One of these has set a fruit and is
growing. The other two have managed to humble me more than once this year.
I broke the growing point on one before it had any laterals. That cost me
at least 3-4 weeks of no female blossoms. This plant had set fruit in July
but it was lost. I broke the other plant's main stem after it had six
laterals started, one of those took over but I managed to break it also.
Those two plants have 1.5& 1.75 in. vines that are very crisp when they
crack. To avoid that problem in the future I have started using an empty
old garden hose that I run gently up and over the growing points to give
gravity alittle help. At least now I have good sized plants to grow the
pumpkins on. Last year I got 250 lbs from one set in Aug. With a little
luck I could break my record of 275 lbs. Roger
