Other Important Facts
Examples of the huge success of the 4th Annual Elk Grove Community Harvest
and Giant Pumpkin Festival in 1998 include:
. An estimated 14,000 people enjoyed a full day of fun in Elk Grove
Regional Park, participating in such activities as pony rides, food booths,
entertainment and dancing groups, antique farm equipment, fire department
displays, carnival games, blacksmithing and quilting displays, 4-H petting
zoo, craft booths, scarecrow contests, and more. The attendance figure is
verifiable to sponsors through car counts, walk-ins and food/carnival
tickets
purchased.
. Over 25 community groups sponsored food, craft, carnival and display
booths, raising more than $18,000 toward their annual fundraising goals.
For
many of these groups, this event is their single largest fundraising
activity
of the year.
. More than 70 entries were recorded in the various pumpkin, squash and
watermelon categories, establishing Elk Grove in its' first year as a GPC
site as Number 3 internationally in total entries.
. The international winner (Bob Troy) in the Heaviest Squash category at
a
whopping 684.5 pounds was weighed in at Elk Grove. A watermelon was weighed
in at 118 pounds, setting a record as the heaviest watermelon in California
.
. Total vegetable entries weighed in at 18,002 pounds, over 9 tons.
. New this year was a Create-A-Cow contest as part of the Agriculture in
the Classroom project, a partnership with the State of California
Department
of Agriculture and Sacrtamento County Faire and the Scarecrow Scamper, a 5K
family fitness walk fundraiser for Operation Clyde.
. A total of $5,350 was awarded in prizes in the various categories, all
raised through sponsors of the event.
. A very conservative estimate recorded more than 300 volunteers involved
in the event, contributing more than 1,674 volunteer hours. This
considerable
commitment is a great example of the true community spirit of Elk Grove.
