Genetics data - missing info!
I have been thinking about this, but keep forgetting to bring it up.
Anyway, the genetics data (trees) that we usually go by leave out one
important piece of info....about the specific plant which supplied the pollen
for the females. We know the females have the good genes, since we know how
big of a pumpkin they produce (by the number which represents them). But we
do not know what the MALE that supplied the pollen produced. We only know
it's parents! How would we know if the pollen was supplied by a weak plant?
Just because the seed that grrew the pollinater plant is maybe a 946.5
Geerts, what if the specific seed from this stock grew a weak plant which
only produced a 50 pound pumpkin and died of disease. It got a bad mix of
genes that we would not want to pass on. I would rather the pollen come from
the SPECIFIC plant that grew a 1000+ pumpkin and was vigorus and healthy.
That specific plant would have the good genes we would want to pass on. But
there is no information in the genetics trees which let us know about the
specific plant which supplied the pollen, which might account for a lot of
the inconsistancies in these strains going by the genetics trees. What does
anyone else think?
