GUYS! That sounds good from one point of view, but last year someone told a
story about how he took his 500+ pounder to a fair (where the largest pumpkin
was only like 100 pounds) with a grin on his face all the way as the truck
backed in with his pumpkin in it while all the rest gazed in amazement with
theit jaws dropped open. Of course he won the grand prize as the 8 YEAR OLD
KID who spent his whole summer growing his 100 pounder was in tears, crying!
So THEN of course he felt like a complete jerk. All of us here have a CLEAR
advantage over just about anyone else in the world growing "Giant Pumpkins".
To THEM, that means Burpee Prizewinners, Big Max, or for the most "advanced"
growers, off the shelf Atlantic Giant seeds. We have accessibility to the
best genetics, the best seeds and information on earth. Is it really fair for
us to go and take over little county fairs and stuff? Especially when the
other pumpkins were grown by little kids? SURE it would have been cool to see
the looks on people's faces if Gary Burke hauled his World Record pumpkin to
some local county fairs and entered it, but when does it cross the line to
being unethical?
Technically, it is probably allowed, but still! But I do admit, it WOULD be
cool to see the looks on people's faces! I wouldn't take the prize money,
just the people's reactions would be good enough for me! I think deep down
that's one of the main reasons we all grow these things!
