Take a good flashlight, go into a dark closet, put your palm over the flashlight,
and turn it on. You will see a red glow, especially near your knuckle area.
Only an uneducated thought here, but I think the sun is powerful enough that a
small portion of light may be able to penetrate the wall of a pumpkin, though it
may not be enough light for our eyes to detect.
