common sense 1-i-b-4

Joe,

This subject has been tossed around quite a bit in the past. An the
conclusion has been yes you are right it makes sense to stop and make a
copy of good work.

But the debate has been does it make sense for us all to make copies of
it. Or has the creative chemistry of genetics really actually been a plus.

Even in a selfed pumpkin you have to play out all those seeds and
"SELECT"' although there will not be any added dilution , you still can
get all kinds of variations from selfed seeds . Some growers have come to
the conclusion that if this is the case.... it is impossible for one
grower with limited space to accomplish this play out . And to continue
with the selfed generations and- select -till the traits you desired are
isolated might take 5-10 years if not more

and you would have to enlist the army of growers to participate. And if
this was carried out in different patches wouldn't the case be difficult to
discifer what was environmental pluses vs actual genetics.

The next conclusion was that most do this for fun!! And any attempt to
standardize the seeds would hinder the game. Pumpkins would be like most
agricultural produce looking the same..people would get bored.......both
growers and observers.

So yes your right make a copy now and again but I think that most feel that
the diversity is what makes this game tick and i think there
right...........Mbrock
