Re: Genetics 101

Hi Joe and others -

Let's keep this discussion going. I just love it when the list addresses
serious questions, especially ones that we don't know the answers to yet!
Unfortunately I'm not knowledgeable enough about genetics to make much of a
contribution, but I'm all ears for whatever ideas you all have.

I do want to point out one thing about the dog analogy. I'm not sure that
is a valid comparison. Atlantic Giants are not like German Shepherds and
St. Bernards. They are like German Shepherds and German Shepherds. I
suspect that dog breeders actively try to cross superior individuals within
a single breed, and I believe that's what many AG growers are also
attempting.

I do not have a strong opinion about selfing or sibbing vs. crossing plants
with mutually exclusive genetics, but let's try to keep the thinking
straight or we will surely end up somewhere weird.
