I do want to point out one thing about the dog analogy.  I'm not sure that
is a valid comparison.  Atlantic Giants are not like German Shepherds and
St. Bernards.  They are like German Shepherds and German Shepherds.  I
suspect that dog breeders actively try to cross superior individuals within
a single breed, and I believe that's what many AG growers are also
attempting.

Hi....maybe we can get some sort of a professional opinion on this
species/breed/variety/etc topic. As I understand it from old bio class a
species is actually defined by being able to cross and produce viable
offspring (able to reproduce). Now I don't know what the difference between
a "breed" and a "variety " is ,  or even a "race". Can someone in the know
clear this up ?
I do know that a trueAG squash has ...generally speaking....a denser
plant, earlier fruiting, thicker walls and different skin color than the
typical ag pumpkin plants that are generally considered pumpkin producers.
At what point Beth, does the differences become a subspecies,or different
variety, breed, or race?..............................I know NOTHING of
genetics and don't claim to know anything of genetics.just a question
!................................G
