RE: 788 Wentzell..... I grew a 588lb'er from this seed in New England (year 2000)

Well I grew the 788 Wentzell this year and 'self' pollinated it... it was a
wonderful plant, with vigorous vines and leaves up to 24+ inches across on 3
foot + high stalks. My pumpkin had the same general shape as the Wentzell
788 (from the pictures I have seen of the 788) with a very smooth, shiny
skin (very little webbing, but this may be due to the fact that the pumpkin
was not fully mature at the time of cutting which was Sep 30th for the
Topsfield, MA weigh-off, it was growing right up to the day I cut it), the
color was a nice medium orange, with no green at all. This pumpkin set about
the 2nd to 3rd week of July.

The only problem I had (which may be due to the fact that I live in New
England and our Springs are not the greatest for growing or 'setting' an
early pumpkin on the vine) was I couldn't get the first 2 pumpkins to hold
on the vine, my pumpkin was the 3rd set on the primary vine, about 12 feet
out from the main hill where it was planted. I pruned off all 3rd
generations and christmas tree'd the 2nd generations off of the primary
vine, all in all .. the total area was about 400 sq. feet.

Hello List,

I was wondering if anyone on the list or if anyone on the list knows anyone
who grew the 788 Wentzell? I can't seem to find anyone else who grew this
seed besides me. I would like to know how it did for anyone else who grew
it. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Please respond in private to:
