I think if you put the pot under the leaf joint and let it root in the pot 
before you cut it, it would work.  Last winter, desperate for a pumpkin fix, 
I grew a vine on my desk at work.  It went through five pots before it 
pooped out - a separate leaf joint and root system in each pot.
