I had holes in the blooping trunks!!! I didn't discover this until I pulled
everything up just before Halloween. Steve Haberman's remedy (take a bow,
Steve) of borax healed the rot at the stem and prevented rot inside. The hole
in the trunk of the surviving AG was the size of my thumb! Moral to the
story: Do not cover the trunk with dirt; leave it bare; cover the vines with
dirt to foil squash vine borers; when in doubt, protect the golden pipeline
from trunk to end of fruit with a tarp, hoop house, what have you to prevent
rain from drenching your plant. My pumpkin measured around 444 in spite of
everything and made a great jack-o-lantern for a pizza shop that gives me
scraps for my compost pile. Steve M.

Steve,
What did you find out? It will save some us at least that long in looking.
