The weather has to be much more than not too cold, it has to be warm.
That's why most pumpkins must be started indoors where the temperature is
warm and constant, then put out under glass or plastic to protect the
highly temperature-sensitive pumpkin seedlings against chill. Remember that
pumpkin is a native of sub-tropical climates.
