Bob: Sounds like you've everything you need to create really exceptional
compost - don't blow it now. Don't rototill now, don't add line now, and
don't cover it with plastic. The more the materials break down before you
add them to your garden the better, in four or five months a open pile like
yours should be beautiful.
Do mix the materials well (don't layer.) Do add water to keep the pile
from drying out - especially in Torrance - best kept like a damp dish rag.
Turn the pile as often as you can - the pile's microbs need air - turning
puts fresh air into the center of the pile. Add lime to your pumpkin patch
now (not your compost pile) but only if you soil test says so. You did
have your soil tested. . . right! Finished compost is the perfect pumpkin
ph - don't mess with perfect.
There are many compost sites on the www - one of the best, is listed in
our pumpkin list archives. Remember - compost happens.
