Re: seeds by the segment

Dick Wallace and John Castellucci of Rhode Island have been toying with a
segment theory for a couple of years. I have always thought (correct me if I
am wrong) that each segment has a singular tube connected to an ovary (seed
sack) inside the pumpkin. Only one pollen grain actually pollinates that
ovary. In theory, if each pollen grain has a unique gene setup, then each
segment will have unique offspring. A pumpkin could have large offspring
coming from one segment, and small from another. This may also explain why, on
occasion, we get squash from seed stocks that are also throwing-off pumpkins
as well. Could be that each is from a different segment.
I planted one of John's segments this year, and will be going back to it for
another try in 1998. I'll let you know how I make out.
Nice, stimulating question!!!

Best wishes,
Don Langevin
