"Mulching along together." How much mulch??

Hey. It is so cold here that it isn't even safe to spit. Duncan would
definitely not be out there personally adding nitrogen to his garden today.
Anyway, there was a post last week by someone who had just put a significant
layer of straw on their garden. The idea was to use the straw for weed control
and then much later to till it in to add organic material to the soil. I
thought about doing this last year but was concerned about mice, disease etc
in the old patch. Also I never saw anyone using mulch for weed control and
"moisture containment" in the soil of a pumpkin patch. It never appeared on
any of the videos of pumpkin gardens either. Anyone with advice about whether
or not to mulch the pumpkin patch, how much, when, what material to use
etc????
