Stwart,
It is quite possible that the roots will extend past where the leaves are.
I generally stay about 3 feet away from the leaf canopy when tilling.
Depending how you prune or train your vine, 3 feet from some of the leaves may
still put you in danger. Those little white roots are from the pumpkin.
