Exploding Pumpkins

Has anyone ever had a young pumpkin explode because it got too much water?
Last summer, I had 2 that had almost reached a diameter of 12 inches and
during the evening we received a very heavy rain, next morning both had
blown out their sides. Wondered if this has happened to anyone else? Keith
