I have had this happen before. I think there is a genetic aspect to this
problem. I had one plant that all but 3 pumpkins exploded, happening at
night some time. It wasn't always associated with rain but usaully was. All
the pumpkins set on the main vine exploded, but 3 eventually set on
secondaries. While a plant 50 feet away had too many pumpkins setting, with
not a one exploding! I think the exploding problem is mainly due to
genetics. Also I think over fertilization may contribute as well.
