Elasticity and shading

Here in Oregon where we don't often have long periods with temps over 90 I
dismissed the need to shade my pumpkins. Perhaps I made a big mistake as
perhaps shading of the fruit, even from the very
beginning, would preserve some elasticity and thus help increase ultimate
size.

Thoughts?
