Here's another question. If what these things need is warmer nights
late in the season, then why aren't there more records from farther
south? Are the pumpkins just so disadvantaged from the excess heat
through midsummer that they have no chance by September and the warmer
nights become irrelevant? I thought I had heard that the reason
larger pumpkins grow farther north is because they need COOLER nights
than we get, for instance, here in the DC area.
I had suspected the big ones needed the greater hours of daylight that
more northerly latitudes get.
The fact that that there is a circadian rhythm is not surprising. The
question is can we manipulate that to enhance pumpkin growth.
Cooler nights?? Longer days?? Do I need to get an air conditioner for
these hot nights? Oh dear, if we're talking circadian rhythms, I bet
Marv is already stocking up on melatonin to inject into his pumpkins!
