This topic of discussion has been a hot one with me. I have talked to many
plant biologists about leaves/ vines / roots feeding pumpkins. What everyone
knows is the plant feeds through photosynthesis. Whether the nutrients feed
back to the pumpkin from vines past the pumpkin is not known. I am begining
to think more and more that we should be growing 2-3 pumpkins on our plants.
To increase our chances and to combat blowout and other casualties. I have had
plant biologists look at my plants only to tell me they thought that there was
little chance that vines on the other side of the plant ( 10 - 20 ' away )
would actually be feeding the pumpkin.
This all has to do with how we grow our plants. Big plant vs small plant how
much is really needed? Like I have said before, I grow big plants, but this
past season I have seen several pumpkins close to or in the 700 lb range grow
on very small plants in back yard gardens.
