It is 70 degrees in PA and we are in the middle of a drought. Many wells are
going dry. I built some small temporary houses over the spots where I plan to
put my pumpkins this next Spring and even did a little tilling. These little
houses will keep the ground dry and allow me to work it up earlier in the
season where the plants will be placed. All this stuff about leaves and roots
stimulated me to get out there. I have a 2500 square foot area. I am going to
go with 4 plants and then will cut it down to two. My tiller only gets me down
about 6 to 8 inches and that is the best I will be able to do. After all is
said and done I have decided to water no more than twice a week and to water
for longer periods of time. I had been watering daily. Also I will prune a bit
more vigorously this next year though I will not be taking out every other
side vine. I am not that courageous. I can tell you from my experience of this
last year that extreme pruning is a death sentence for the pumpkin on the
vine. I learned this from a groundhog. Soil testing shows that I am in the
high range on most everything except the pH which is around 7 now. Come on
Spring!!! Are you out there Marvin Hicks?
