Re: Stumpless Pumpkins
Bob
We ,the Carlsons, feel we could help you out with this topic.Good thing
you weren't looking for info on 800# pumpkins cause we would have no
clue on that!!!As far as stumpless goes, we are with the program!!! here
goes.
Did stump rot you ask? Why of course it did . You think we cut the
stump off just to give the rest of the competition a fighting chance!!!
LOL We might be a little slow in Iowa but not that slow!!!
Did you cut the vine? yes as july rolled in I noticed the carlson
431# plant kinda was lacking some of that AG aggressiveness. I looked
the plant over could not find anything wrong. I check the stump overbut
nothing showed then. on the 17th I noticed a small soft on the stump.
reached down to touch it and my finger went right through it. Then
grabbed the first 2 to 3 foot and realized that the whole area was
mush!! you could literally squeeze the juice right out of it. No white
foam visible. A small wet spot was all that was present when I found it.
the reason i cut it out was it appeared to get better the farther I got
from the stump. Kinda like it was traveling upthe main. I cut the first
4 foot of main off and cut the first 2 side vines off on each side of
the main and left them in as they weren't affected yet. 2 or these side
vines had 1 pumpkin on them about the size of a softball. each side
vine was 8 foot long with about 8 to 10. leaves. these 2 vines each went
on support a pumpkin that measured about 105" and 106" in circum. Not to
bad for 10 leaves!!
The one pumpkin that was left on the rest of the plant was only the
size of a golfball when the main was cut out. this one grew on about the
8th side vine out from the terminated main. the rest of the plant
probably had 100 to 125 good leaves.
the pumpkin grew pretty good considering all the bad things that were
going on with the plant. Although it weighed in light we were still
pleased. Final measurements and weight were as follows 144x 87x 89
320" total actual weight 582#
boy my fingers are tired!!!
