Re: Stumpless Pumpkins

I grew two stump less pumpkins/squash in '98. The first was on a 941 Eaton
plant that showed signs of bacterial wilt close to the base in late July. The
plant had a 40 ft. main vine and a fruit set 35 ft. out. So I cut off all but
the last 12 ft. of vine hoping the bacteria had not spread into this portion of
the plant. Unfortunately, this did not prevent the disease from spreading on and
the remainder of the plant died and the pumpkin rotted at 261 lb. The second was
a experiment. I was pruning my 671 Stellpflug plant and was throwing vines to
the edge of my patch. These vines rooted and began to grow. I left one of them
and it grew to about 8 ft. long and produced a 100 lb. squash. I wouldn't go
stump less until I have to.
