Hi Everyone,
As I mentioned a short time ago, I will be doing a survey of pollination
technique and number of seeds. I have one other project currently using up
most of my allotted space on Hotmail... as soon as I wrap that and get
through the holidays, I will be proceeding. First I will post to the lists
and hope to get most of the info. I will then follow up with snails to
growers of large pumpkins who don't respond via email. That questionnaire
is largely ready to go.
It has occurred to me that there is another area I am especially interested
in, and as long as I'm sending out questionnaires and tabulating
information, I might as well do one on this subject too. This one is growth
habit. You know - the tortoise and the hare plants. Some AG's are fast out
of the starting gate and grow insanely fast. We've come to refer to this as
'early vigor'. What I am curious about is what kind (size) of fruit do
these plants produce? I have heard at least a couple of folks who have
grown 900+ or 1000+ pumpkins say the plants weren't that impressive or that
they thought about pulling them because the plants seemed so pokey early in
the season. Is this a pattern? Is it an identifiable genetic trait? Are
they mutually exclusive? i.e., can you have both early vigor AND late
season stamina? Anyway, I will be working up a questionnaire on this
subject, too, so if anyone has any questions they think should be included
or any observations or angles that would be useful in formulating the
questions, I would love to hear from you.
Thanks!
Beth
