RE: 903 Holland- the 879 Holland's forgotten Sister?

Hi, John,

I tried the 903 in 1998 in Sioux Falls, SD. It set a nice early egg-shaped
pumpkin which I culled at estimated 117 lbs. after 28 days because of a
blossom end crack into the seed cavity. It was a nice vigorous plant, but I
pulled it because it produced no other good pumpkins in the following couple
of weeks, whereas another plant with which it was competing for space set a
couple nice pumpkins in that time. I did manage to keep it long enough to
use it as a pollinator for my Wilbers 312 (98) = LaRue 916 x Holland 903,
which was between 11.5% and 20% over estimated weight, depending on whose
charts you use. By the way, 95% of the vines for these plants were growing
over the lawn in my backyard, sprawling out from my small raised bed garden.

Regards,
Chris Wilbers

Subject: 903 Holland- the 879 Holland's forgotten Sister?

I have noticed that the 879 has become a very popular seed, but what about
its forgotten sister seed the 903 Holland. If I remember correctly from Joel
Holland's tape the 903 came off the same plant but split before the
weighoff. It was pollinated with a 990 bax which is the same as the 879.
Correct me if I am wrong. Has anyone tried the 903? And with what results?
Is this possibly an overlooked seed?

John
