Re: Germinatin box
Pumpkins & Chess, others,
I don't think there is any correlation between how a
seed germinates and whether it will produce a flat
vine, have stump rot, yellow or green vines, big or
small leaves, produce pumpkins that have stem or
blossom split, or fruit with a particular color,
shape, or size.
To me it sounds like you are trying to draw a line,
an arbitrary line, that says- this is what I think is
logical and reasonable according to the facts and
goals that I have, one that I am comfortable with, why
doesn't everyone agree with me ?
Well some people might and other won't. It is a
personal choice. Other people think differently and
come to different logical and reasonable conclusions.
One person might think... why do we even take the
seeds out of the pumpkins ? isn't it natural to just
leave them in there and let see what happens next
spring ?
why should we plant them at all ? just leave them...
and why should we till the ground, add fertilize or
water them ? i won't pollenate my plant- that is why
nature provided bees. I fact i won't even go out and
get a pumpkin and put in my yard. I mean- if nature
want's me to have a pumpkin plant in my yard then
somehow one will show up there. Won't nature take
care of all that ? the strong seeds will make it, the
ones that will produce the best and strongest plants ?
another person might think..... If our goal is to
produce big fruit, then why shouldn't we do everything
with in our control to reach that goal ? I'm going to
buy all the best seeds I can. I'm going to germinate
my seeds in a special electromagnetic environmentally
controlled area. I'll amend and fiddle with my soil
all year round. I'll build a huge enclosed building
to grow in, with artifical lights and heat- with a
removeable top for natural sunshine too. I'll set up
an automatic temperature and humidity controlled
sprinkler and fertilizing systems. I'll try all the
newest unproven fertilizers in huge amaounts. I'll use
all the latest and greatest chemical to kill all the
bug that threaten my plant. I'll put up an electric
fence and electric ground spikes to keep out all
unwanted animals. I'll set up a booby trapped alarm
system to keep out human intruders. I'll trench and
bury my vines. I'll hand pollinate each and every
fruit. I'll build a enclosed controled shade chamber.
I'll coat the pumpkins with a softening cream so they
will be less prone to split. I'll do everything i can
to make sure I have the best chance of growing the
biggest pumpkin that I can.
so who is right and who is wrong ?-
in my opinion, they are both right, they both can do
whatever they feel like.
And what you and I and everyone else are doing is what
we feel comfortable with. which is fine. lets go for
it.
where you get into trouble is thinking that others
should agree with where you drew your line.
my 2 cents worth-

Larry seems to be a bit scared here. But I am not
saying throw your
seed outside and see what happens. I am just saying
give it good conditions
in a peat pot inside at about 70 to 75 degrees and see
what happens. Don't
sand the seed, don't give it perfect temps. Perhaps
if we were all doing
this there would be stronger seed lines today and not
all of these seting
problems, flat vines, rot, wilt, and blow ups.
