Trenching is usually done ahead of the vine so as the vine grows and lays down,
it is in the trench. You just back fill a little at a time basically before the
roots develop. Soil disturbance should be minimal.
I would go for the larger tap roots and sacrifice a few of the smaller root
hairs if necessary. As we have discovered there are plenty of them and loosing a
small percentage of them would probably not impact the plant. Each tap root
will also put out it's own hair roots.
