Gary,
Hopefully you will be able to find some straw in that old
barn. Straw is also good mulch, and contains little weed
seed. The straw is what is left after the combine has come
through and harvested all the grain, just leaving the stalks
of wheat. It is usually used as bedding for animals.
Don't be surprised if you have to add a lot back to the
soil, as farming can be very draining on soil over years and
years of farming. I have seen some farms where good topsoil
gets very sandy and poor, due to improper care of the soil.
Don't use hay though, as that is FULL of weed seed.
