Tom,
I have seen trenching done in a variety of ways. Some Trench very heavy. All you can
see are nothing but the leaves and stalks coming out of the ground.
I trench a little on the lighter side. I prefer to be able to see how the vine looks
here and there.
In the scenario you describe below, I would bury all of the secondary vines, part of
the primary before the pumpkins and most all of it after the pumpkin as long as you
leave enough slack for the pumpkins to grow.
