Just two notes. First, remember that you have to leave enough of the vine
free (or uproot it later) and with enough flex that you can raise and
support it as the pumpkin grows. Expecting a big pumpkin? Be sure the vine
can move up a great deal..
Second, Bob is in California, and I believe he does not have to worry about
vine borers. If you live east of the Rockies, it's better to cover (trench,
bury, nylon stockings, whatever) as much of the vine as possible, as it
gives the borers less opportunity to enter the vines. Covering won't keep
borers out by itself, but it does limit the vine's exposure to them.
