germinating seeds

Hello list, I have been reading for a couple of months now so I figure its about time to send a post. I was interested in how any of you go about germinating your seeds in the spring. I only have wood heat in my house and both my wife and I work so it is difficult to regulate the temperature in the house through the day. Last year I direct seeded but had a late start because of a late spring here. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
