This is something that Ray Waterman wrote on the pumpkin list that I thought
should be persevered for those of you whom didn't see it
I've had giant pumpkins last until the next August. Harvested in October.
Some of you may recall the AG I took with me to the MI Pumpkin School in
1990? This event was held in the spring. I've heard field pumpkins going
nearly 2 years in a basement. This is how the Pilgrims made it through the
first winters here in the Americas. Of course, the native Indian peoples
provided the pumpkins or squash. I was once told by an old Indian friend
that 200 years ago, at any one time, the Six Nation Confederacy held 2
million bushels of corn in reserve for whatever need might occur. Things
were not as they are today; going to the freezer for a TV Dinner and the
"microwave"! Least we not forget where our food comes from! Many of today's
citizens think their food comes from the store. Well, it don't! Our small
part in teaching, (if not just ourselves) the ability to grow, (if not just
for fun) a food source from the "land" and promoting that ability in the
awareness we give the giant pumpkin each fall is a tribute to human
preservation in itself. This hobby has its merits. "Challenge gardening is
recreational and fun!".
