Dear Cliff:
I think I know the answer! First of all your engine timing is off (that is 
the timing when the engine controls the spark).
Briggs and Stratton are really big for the Key Way on the fly wheel going 
out! If the spark occurs before the engine gets to TDC (top dead center), it 
will and may not only kick back, it may even run in reverse!
In most cases you need to pull of the flywheel that is located under the 
recoil. You almost always need a puller to get the flywheel off. Once you get 
it off replace the Keyway! It is made from aluminum and if even has a small 
kick in it, it will throw your timing off just enough to hurt you bad (how 
many have had the rope torn out of their hands and lost a finger nail of two 
in the process)?
Make the timing right and it should never kick back.
