Sounds like the flywheel has shifted on the crank shaft. This happens to lawn mowers when the blade hits something and suddenly stops the crank and the heavy flywheel shears the keeper and moves out of correct position. This throws the timing off and causes a early spark which makes the kick-back. How it happened to a roto-tiller I 'm not sure. Have you ever used starter fluid on it? To check/fix need to remove fly-wheel.
