Re: Top Proven Seeds For 2003

Vince,

Thanks for this research!

One point I might add is that of these top 5, three
were grown from the 935 Lloyd, and two from the 801.5
Stelts. And each of these, the 935 and 801.5, are seeds
that had some "inbreeding" (selfing, sibbing, cross
with the mother, etc.)... Lending more creedence to the
theory that you take a fairly pure line, THEN cross it,
then you might create a great seed. (This is the whole
F1/F2 hybrid thing I was trying to explain earlier...)

Your point about how some seeds are heavily planted
(by top growers) and other are not is also something
that should not be ignored and is hard to factor in.

Regards, Cliff

If you are looking for a proven seed to plant this year, your
selection has never been larger. Fifty-three different seeds
have produced at least one thousand pounder.

So which are the hottest?? I researched the AGGC database for
all pumpkins and squash over 1,000 pounds and found 101
thousand-plus specimens. A look at their family trees revealed
some interesting facts. The most compelling is that the top
five seeds have produced over 40% of 1,000 lbrs.

Top 5 Seeds:

1. 723 Bobier - 16
2. 846 Calai - 10
3. 845 Bobier - 6
4. 705 Stelts - 5
5. 712 Kuhn - 4

Two more to take a hard look at are the 875 Dill and the 790
Daletas which have grown two each including a twelve hundred
pounder. Many of the rest of the proven seeds have been only
lightly planted so just how hot they may be is still a
question.

the right stuff go to:
