RE: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #235

Hey Tad,

Was the patch soil tested & all appropriate amendments added in the fall
last year?
If so, and the soil didn't compact badly under the fabric you might be OK.
The hands will know. Can you dig through the soil with your bare hands? How
deep?

Tad with the Cub Scouts again.

Just a few questions.

We are growing conn. field pumpkins for our fundraising pumpkin patch.
Do we have to roto till the area before planting? Or can I dig holes
and fill with potting soil?

We are using soaker hoases and weed block. These were put in place last
year. My real question is should we pull it up (the chips, weed block
and soaker hoses) to roto till?

Also for the AG pumpkins, when should I start the seeds indoors? I
bought a seed starter set with the heating pad.

Thanks

Tad

Doc.........I have had a few conversations with this person (matfox). I
can
seldom get clear information from him. I do not talk to him anymore
unless
he addresses me on the chat line at BP. He attends our weigh off usually
under the weather and smelling of booze. Barff...so that's my take on
him.

Marv,
I believe I can clarify Mat's post:

Izzit something that I did?
Big Zac is a hybrid.

What a rascally bother!
Big Zac's not its father,
I must look for another...
As I did for its mother.

A pang of anxiety
Over hybrid variety
In pumpkins, tomatoes,
Eggplants and potatoes
Cilantro, turmeric -
Not a one is generic!

An anxious attack...
Big zack is Big zack
So send me a sack
Size is something I lack
And would like in my seeds
As my likes become needs.

In tomatoes genetic
Concerns are frenetic.
Evidence anecdotal
Says the bull jive is total.
Mat Fox says it's bull
And he learned that in school.

He couldn't be more direct
If his variety were correct
Behave as you should
And your genes should be good.

Tom, Funny but I don't recall this great act of civility. On the other
hand
I sometimes do stuff like that without to much thought. Bottom line
is........I have just grubbed out my collection which includes a bunch
of
Golden Oldies. They are now in the toast 'em and roast 'em category.
Need
more? Holler quick and as they say, "send your address and leave the
light
on".
And thanks for your kind appreciation. Wish more folks took a minute to
occasionally be so nice.
