Re: pumpkins DIGEST V1 #235
Tad: Tricky question!!! If you have five percent or more organic
content in the patch and your weed block is a good working mulch I would
say plant in the soil by using a simple hole in the ground. I would not use
the soft fluffy mix pro-mix or equal for direct seeding. I would use a
Mycorrhizae support per the whole patch. First mix a teaspoon full of
powder in the planting holes and second treat and water in the ballance of
the patch. I use Mycorrhizae from: http://www.bio-organics.com/ I would
use this product called Myco Minerals and no further fertilizer for field
pumpkins.
....Secondly I would leave the soaker hoses and mulch in place. I would
apply Black Strap Molasses, 4 ounces in two gallons of water as a biological
starter to get your bacteria fat and sassy. Apply twice three weeks ahead
of direct seeding about ten days apart. During the season continue the
Molasses at the rate of one ounce per gallon of water as a foliar spray. do
this to wet the plants in the AM once a week to the point of some run off.
That is all I would do keeping Neem Oil with two tablespoons of Baking Soda
added per gallon of spray mix. I prefer to not use harsh chemicals unless
it appears there is no other choice.
....I would plant AG's in a gallon size ice cream container using pro-mix or
equal. Be sure the pro-mix is just barely damp. Using 220 grit sandpaper
sand the sides and top untill you see a little gray line begining to appear.
Soak seed for two or three hours in H2O2 and water mixed 50/50. This will
jump start your seed and provide a natural fungicide. Slide them into the
pot at a 45 degree angle. They will emerge when germinated at 80 degrees
within three to five days. Remove from germination box and get to bright
window or grow lights. The first true leaf will show in another three to
five days. Immediately at this point get them out and in the patch under a
plastic tent if frost is an issue. I am sending some reading materal by
attachment. Don't know if this will work. If not send me an E direct. My
diary under the name of docgipe on BigPumpkin.com shows all the steps
including the making of the ice cream gallon pot.
