Probably just about anything in or in the immediate area of the tunnels, however I'm sure it does dissipate. On the other hand, if you have gophers, your going to loose your pumpkins and vines anyway. Fumatoxin is injected into the tunnels and I believe moisture helps activate it. Works better in clay than sand. I use the fire hose because It gives me an unlimited, rapid supply of water. If I had to use the storage tank, I would have at least 200 gallons with a one and a half inch hose. The idea being to rapidly fill there tunnel system with a large volume of water before they can get to higher ground. A garden hose just doesn't cut it.Another thing the farmers use around this area is good old carbon dioxide ( CO2 ).
They get a bottle used for soda fountain carbonation and just blast it into the holes
and then cover up the entrance.
The CO2 displaces all the oxygen and the gophers just go to sleep and never
wake up. It's non-toxic unlike the usual poisons available. Also, dry ice can be
used, but takes awhile to do the job as it has to sublimate and settle into the holes
and tunnels. Put a few chunks in the hole(s) and close the hole. It's heavier than
air and will displace the oxygen.
