fungus gnats!!???

Leigh, I don't think they're fungus gnats. They aren't like the picture I found on the internet, anyway. The bodies are a lot like a fruit fly, but the eyes are not red. If they ARE fungus gnats, will they eat the roots of my Atlantic Giant Pumpkins??? Will coffee grounds encourage them or discourage them? Should I drink more coffee, throw the grounds at the pumpkins, and encourage everyone to use the pumpkin patch as a urinal? to use the worm bin as a urinal? Oh, no, that's to keep the deer away.

Serious question: When should I think about planting my pumpkin seeds? If I'm reading everything right, I think it takes about 112 days to maturity from emergence. Is that right? So I just need to back-count from the weigh off date? Thanks. I'm getting a little nervous about this. It looks like I'm going to have a lot of heavy work ahead of me this summer. I can no longer use my grandchildren as slave labor; just when they're getting to a size to be helpful, they're getting old enough to balk at orders involving intense sweat.

cheers,
duchess of gladstone
