I have a great "germinator" - It is an overhead desk cabinet with a
flourescent light mounted underneath. I leave the light on all the
time; the inside temperature ranges from 81 to 85 degrees. It is dry,
so I put plastic over each pot to retain moisture. Last year I had 100%
germination on everything I put in there EXCEPT Atlantic Giants - only
about 40% germination on those... which leads me to the question of how
do I increase AG germination.
I am interested in everyone's approach - I think George has said he
freezes them first, then puts them straight into the ground; I have also
heard of bubbling, filing edges, gibberellic acid, and divining rods.
So is there a consensus??
(I have already learned a bit about seeds since then - last year I had
generic seeds and did not have them refrigerated. I now have known
seeds, they are in the fridge, and I will probably freeze them for a
little while right before I plant them.)
I have another question... I am dying here listening to all of you talk
about soil preparation, because I don't know yet where I will be
planting (other than with my Dad in PA, which is a given). We are
househunting - one house we have looked at is near a golf course: my
question is how dangerous is that for pumpkins. George mentioned that
2-4-D is very dangerous anywhere nearby... should I assume that a golf
course would use 2-4-D and/or other chemicals that could be a problem
for the pumpkins?
