Might I suggest Halloween as the cut-off date.
I believe the first weekend in October was set as the 'official'
weigh-off date because of the climate in many of the northern
competitor's latitudes. This is usually about the time of the first
frost for many areas and the subsequent demise of everyone's garden. In
the southern areas, we have a much longer growing season. Let's take
advantage of it and coincide our activities with the ultimate pumpkin
event, "Halloween"!
