Re: Springs a comin?

Elizabeth,
I have been planting my pumpkins in the 1st week of June. This year I'm gonna
plant in the 1st week of May. Hopefully I will have a bigger stronger plant
by pollenation time. In the past I grew 2 plants in a 17x11 foot space. Of
course they spread beyond that into the lawn. This year I will plant 1 plant.
I have done a soil test and am waiting for the results. My tomatoes last year
and in years past developed bottom rot probably due to a lack of calcium. The
clay in last years pumpkin mound has a pH of 5.5. I must get this up to at
least 6.5. I have obtained a pickup truck load and a half of horse and cow
manure. The pH of the manure is 6.9 to 7.0. I have located several books at
Barnes & Noble on composting and soil improvement. Hopefully I can learn this
hand pollenation technique and get a big pumpkin. By pollenation time I'm
sure that someone will enlighten me about what a pumpkin condom is and how to
make one or where to buy them.
I am looking forward to the next growing season!
